Common Cannabis Terpenes: Myrcene

About Cannabis: The Terpene Myrcene

Feb 11, 2017

The terpene myrcene is found in hops, mangoes, lemongrass and thyme, but it’s also the most abundant and most prevalent terpene found in medical Cannabis. It’s responsible for creating Cannabis’s earthy, musky, scent and flavour.

Pungent smelling in heavy dosages, the terpene myrcene was determined to be the most common terpene in Cannabis by a 1997 Swiss study. The 1997 study Essential Oil Cannabis Sativa L. Strains published by Swiss Federal Agroecology and Agriculture Centre examined sixteen terpenes in Cannabis and concluded myrcene was the most abundant and was most prevalent in samples studied.

In some cases over half the terpene profile was made up of myrcene.

Therefore it’s not surprising many Peace Naturals dried Cannabis products contain myrcene in various volumes. Some of our Cannabis varieties are dominated by the terpene myrcene while others contain a hint of its unique flavours and aromas.

Fascinatingly, while myrcene terpenes are the most commonly found in Cannabis, they are the smallest terpene molecule.

With a boiling point of 168°C (334°F), it’s easy to experience the flavour, aroma and effects of myrcene by setting a vaporizer to this temperature.

Myrcene has been studied for its pain relieving and sedate properties. Given its commonly found in Cannabis, what role does it play in creating sedate or relaxing effect? Many people seeking sedate Cannabis prefer indica varieties, but is it possible varieties loaded with myrene are more  suitable?

The entourage effect suggests terpenes such as myrcene play an important role in modulating Cannabinoid intake. Myrcene is believed to provide a better absorption for Cannabinoids than other terpenes. What role does terpene myrcene have in creating potent Cannabis?

For some people employing Cannabis as adjunct therapy these are questions are worth personal studying. A few notes and a personal check in before and after employing Cannabis therapy could help determine if Cannabis with voluminous amounts of myrcene is ideal for you.
