Peace Naturals Pitches In To Create Scleroderma Awareness
June Is Scleroderma Month
While Scleroderma is one of the more common rare diseases, it’s not widely known about unless this autoimmune disease is directly impacting yourself or a family member.
Peace Naturals is pitching in to help generate Scleroderma Awareness on behalf of our friends at Scleroderma Society of Ontario and Scleroderma Society of Canada because we strive to understand illnesses and diseases impacting Canadians.
NEST is our opportunity to play the information we’ve learned forward because “lack of awareness works against us,” explained Rebecca Wissenz president of Scleroderma Society of Ontario on Hamilton radio station CHML 900.
What is scleroderma?
“It’s a disease which causes too much scarring on the skin and internal organs from an overactive immune system,” said Dr. Maggie Larché, Associate Professor, Divisions of Rheumatology and Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Department of Medicine McMaster University.
It’s an autoimmune disease where a person’s own immune system begins to attack itself.
Instead of protecting a person from illness, the immune system begins to mistakenly attack itself. Mistaking connective tissue as foreign invaders.
Scleroderma is a painful disease with a myriad of symptoms and like many rare diseases has no known cure.
All this month Scleroderma Society of Ontario and Scleroderma Society of Canada are raising research funds.
“This is a huge month for us. Last year we raised $170,000 during our fundraiser walks. Six hundred people walked for scleroderma,” explained Anna McCusker executive director of Scleroderma Society of Ontario.
It’s not a walk-a-thon, but a leisurely stroll.
Like many diseases Peace Naturals clients are facing, the process for a diagnosis is a timely matter.
Todd Martin, a patient with Scleroderma, talked about the two year process he went through to be diagnosed.
“You have to be your own advocate. It’s important to listen your body and be honest about your symptoms,” said Wisenez.
This was a wonderful panel discussion on Scleroderma and is a great source of information.
