Why Peace Naturals Uses The Word Cannabis, Not Marijuana
Terminology Cannabis Not Marijuana
The word marijuana or marihuana didn’t become popular until the 1930s when it was used as a tool for societal shaming. Until this point in time Cannabis and Hemp was the common terminology employed by Canadians.
It was around 1910 when ‘marihuana’ or ‘marijuana’ began to pop up in English lexicon. However, it wasn’t until the 1930s when prohibitionists adopted the term to cause confusion and stigma did the word marijuana become much more popular phrase. Many familiar with the Cannabis plant were actually opposed to marihuana, which was sometimes referred to as loco weed, believing it to be something entirely different.
The word entered English usage in the late 19th century. The word was codified into law and became part of common American English with the passing of the 1937 Marihuana tax act. Marijuana Word Wikipedia
Cannabis is a much more ancient word. With historical roots going so far as potentially 440 BCE. As the Cannabis plant spread across Europe and Asia, people adopted not only the plant, but the word into their own language. The word “Hemp” especially crops up in many languages.
Etymology scholars trace the root of the word Cannabis to Greek kannabis. The Oxford dictionary has the first recorded use in 1548 and Cannabis was referenced for the first time in 1753 as a plant in Species Plantarum. Scholars adopted the botanical term from Greek kannabis.
Despite efforts at normalization stigmatization continues to this very day. Many people feel some kind of shame associated with marijuana, marihuana and even medical marijuana. Unfortunately, even medical marijuana is routinely lumped in with other negative marijuana stereotypes.
Removing any potential stigmas and barriers is important to us and our efforts begin by employing different terminology. Patients shouldn’t feel subjected to any potential shame for making their lives a little better.
While marijuana terms are much more popular, Peace Naturals will always refer to your medicine as Cannabis or medical Cannabis. Sometimes, we may even write or say Peace Naturals products, but never medical marijuana.
One way to remove some stigma is by employing a word with less strings attached to it. Cannabis is much more classier term and is a scientific word referring to the whole plant. We encourage you to adopt Cannabis or medical Cannabis when referencing your Peace Naturals product.
